The January Jog

For results for the 2010 January Jog click here.

The Newport Advertiser January Jog returns in 2010 aiming to raise more money for Macmillan Cancer. The jog takes place on Sunday, January 3, at Shuker Field with the usual 5km senior race and a 2.5km fun run. Last year's event pulled in more than £3,000 for Macmillan Cancer and it is hoped the 2010 race will beat that barrier.

There is plenty of fun for all the family with refreshments and live entertainment provided on the day. Registration starts at 11am at the sports field with organisers aiming to get as many people signed up before the day as possible. The cost of the event has been frozen this year with the senior race £5 and the fun run only £3. There is no minimum amount of money to raise.

Lilleshall Monumental 10K

This is a new race based at the pretty village of Lilleshall in Shropshire. The main race is a 10K (ish) off road run with the climb to the top of Lilleshall Monument hill towards the end. There is also a fun run.   Refreshments are served throughout the morning and lunchtime.. See the race website here.

As well as entry fees, the event raised further funds from the BBQ/Teas/raffle and are delighted to say we now can finalise our figure for monies  raised from  the day as £1368.00.  The money is being donated to the Friends of Lilleshall school to buy sports equipment. This far exceeds anything we had hoped for, so thanks once again to everyone involved.

The start and finish for both the 10K and fun run is in the beautiful grounds of Longford Hall where refreshments are available throughout the morning.

There is also free entry to the Carnival entertainment field for 10K runners after the race.

Hinstock 5K and Fun Run

The Hinstock Fun Run is rapidly becoming a regular event in the village calendar. As a charity, fundraising event, this year it is raising money in aid of the County Air Ambulance trust, a lifeline for several residents of the village; and also in aid of Hinstock Tennis Club.

Both runs are multi-terrain, scenic, country runs. There are numerous prizes for different categories including best fancy dress. Refreshments are available in the morning and a lunchtime barbecue to replace all those lost calories will be held at the Falcon Inn where there will also be face painting and a prize raffle draw.

The Little Wenlock Wheeze

The Little Wenlock Wheeze has become a regular event in the village calendar. As a community fundraising event, it manages to get local people involved in helping to organise the race and raise money for the village hall. The route is a 6k Multi Terrain scenic run through the lovely countryside around the village. The race is held in conjunction with Telford Athletic Club.

The Newport Duathlon

The Newport Duathlon is a joint event hosted by Newport & District Running Club and Newport Cycling Club. The race consists of a mixed terrain 5k run, and 20K cycle on quiet rural lanes, followed by a repeat of the 5K run. The race has been held for two years and is growing in popularity and numbers.

The Wrekin Wrecker fell race

The Wrekin Wrecker has been run since 2002 and has established itself as a very well organised race with excellent facilities, a great course and friendly marshals. The course is an 8 mile one lap route over 2400 ft of ascent. The terrain is mainly good paths but it features tough ascents and steep descents. There is also a good deal of runnable flat (ish) stuff. So overall, no particular style/strength of fellrunner is favoured.

The race is held under Fell Runner's Association and you are required to carry specified kit - kit checks will be undertaken at the start line and so whatever your feelings about the above, please respect the position of the race organisers and adhere to the rules.

Christmas Eve Escapade

The Christmas Eve Escapade is a charity family run and walk based at Moreton, Staffordshire. The 2008 event raised over £250 for Help The Aged. The event consists of three routes varying fro 3K to 16K and are mainly off-road. Runners and walkers are given maps at the start and navigate their way around the lovely countryside around Moreton. Returning to the Millennium Hall at the finish, hot soup and mince pies are available.

Always a popular event, the race limit is reached by early November. Over 450 people are expected to take part in the 10k run, which follows quiet country lanes through the villages around Wheaton Aston.
