Sunday 2nd November 2007 11:00 am
This was the 6th running of this challenging fell race. Once again, it was the second race in the Shropshire winter fellrace series. For more details of the series, please see http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/fellrunner/
Parking, changing facilities (including showers) and race registration is at Wellington Cricket Club. Please follow signs from junction 7 of the M54 or from the B5061 from Telford or Shrewsbury. The race starts at 11:00 am and registration closes at 10:45. This is to allow enough time for runners to make their way to the start which is about 1 mile away.
The race starts from the base of the Wrekin. Basically, the course is an 8 mile one lap route over 2400 ft of ascent. The terrain is mainly good paths and features tough ascents and steep descents but there is also a good deal of runnable flat (ish) stuff. So overall, no particular style/strength of fell runner is favoured.
The following is a brief desciption which may of course mean nothing to you unless you know the hill!
From the start there is a short uphill section then a fairly level section for about 1/2 mile. Then its uphill (runnable) to a point half way up the Wrekin at the top of a path known as 'zig-zag' or 'heros'. Then its down a wide track and a steep scree slope more or less to the same elevation as the start. Then its a half mile uphill before leveling out for another mile or so. Then its a steep climb of about 600 feet up a path called the 'gaoty' (use imagination!) to the summit. Then ist levl and downwards to a point you've already passed - the top of heros. Then down a difficult twisting and steep descent - the 'bmx' to the start of a long climb; first up 'the beeches which is a lovely beech lined path; then up the Wrekin's main drag till you reach the summit for the second time. Down another steep descent, up a short stiff ascent up 'little hill' or 'the bump' then descend and along a series of taxing switchbacks till you reach the finish on the old firing range.
After the race there will be a bar and free food back at the Cricket Club where the presentation will take place at about 1:00pm. We have prizes for all age categories.
