Wrekin Streak
Some people take a nice stroll up the Wrekin at the weekend to get some fresh air or walk the dog, but last week over one hundred athletes gathered at its base to take part in the Wrekin Streak.
This race may only have been just over two miles long, which is quite short for many club runners, but it involves them running, jogging or walking up the stony main track of the Wrekin as fast as possible before rounding the trig point at the summit and throwing themselves straight down again at what seems a suicidal speed to cross the finish line at the base.
Steve Gale of Shrewsbury AC proved that he was fittest on the day of the race, going up and down the hill in the time of 18m 05s.
Only three Newport runners braved this challenge, but produced some good times. Ben Roper covered the distance in 22m 43s to gain 35th place as evidence that he is improving on the hills. David Brown managed to produce a time of 24m 42s to be 52nd and Sandra Pattinson pushed right on to the finish to be 94th in 29m 34s.
