Welsh 1000m Peaks Race

This arduous event took place on the first Saturday in June and started at Abergwyngregyn on the shoreline of Colwyn Bay in North Wales. Starting climbing almost immediately from the start, competitors had to climb four peaks over 1000m high in Carnedd Llewelyn, Carnedd Dafydd and Carnedd ugain on the way to the finish at the summit of Snowdon. The total distance was around 32km with approximately 8000ft of ascent and not a challenge for those without the fitness and determination to keep going over the wild terrain.

From an original field of 76 only 66 finished which is a measure of how tough this race was. Conditions were completely different from the previous year when there was wind, sleet and rain and competitors risked hypothermia. This year the runners risked dehydration in the heat and had to keep drinking at regular intervals to keep them going.

Noel Hogan and John Taylor took on this event and both did very well with Noel finishing 22nd in 5hr 35m 29s and John just over two minutes behind him in 5hr 37m 39s to gain 25th place.
