Howarth Hobble (Wuthering Hike)
Several members of Newport and District Running Club travelled to Yorkshire to start off their ultra running season by attempting the 32 miles of the Howarth Hobble, which is also known as the Wuthering Hike, due to the area through which it is run.
Starting at 8.00am the race headed off along the Pennine Way and traversed open moors towards Todmorton and then a sharp climb up to Stoodley Pike overlooking Hebdon Bridge.
The weather which had started out dull now improved and the sun came out for the last thirteen or so miles.
Noel Hogan was first home for the club with a time of 5hr 22m to gain 69th place in a field of 273 – and excellent result. Sandy Mackenzie and John Taylor encouraged each other all the way round and were 137th and 138th respectively in the time of 6hr 04m.
Lisa Garside was hot on their heels to be 148th in 6hr 10m with Nick Cooper 190th in 6hr 49m and Julie Wyant completing the line up in 194th in 6hr 53m.
