The club is for all runners of whatever pace and experience, however and whenever you run. Everyone can benefit from joining – beginners, improvers, and seasoned racing snakes.
Benefits of Joining Our Club
Cheaper race entry £2. Any race you enter will cost £2 more than if you are a member of an affiliated club like ours.
What’s going on. Get to know about races and events. Take part in a wide range of different running events – fell running, road racing, cross country and triathlons. We also organise trips to races like Cardiff marathon, Isle of Man mountain marathon, Amsterdam, Berlin, Jungfrau marathons and other races.
All about running. Get friendly advice about running, equipment, races and training. Tips on how to improve and what to do to prevent injury and where to get treatment. We are also planning seminar events and special training sessions.
Join the crowd. Many people enjoy their running as a solitary activity but running with a group adds a new dimension to your enjoyment of running. Running with the club brings lots of social benefits such as a friendly support and encouragement, being with people who don’t think all runners are mad, getting to know people you run with and sharing a drink and a joke afterwards. We also organise social events such as a Quiz evening, Christmas dinner, BBQ’s etc.
Getting better all the time. Running with other people will help you stick to your pace and improve it. By running with the club you’ll be with runners who can stretch you and give you the challenge to improve.
Choose your run. The club has a number of different runs through each week and you can choose to suit you. Choose one to suit your running. Everyone is welcome, and someone will stay with you all of the run.
Get regular. Running with the club gives you a regular slot for your running – something you’ll feel you want to turn up to when without this incentive, various excuses kick in (its raining, its cold, I’m knackered, I haven’t run for a week etc). Running with the club is safer, especially during the dark nights.
Putting something back. As well as take part in races, we organise two ourselves – the Newport Carnival 10k in June and the Wrekin Wrecker fell race in November. We also help out with other local events such as the Edge-ahead race in Edgmond in March and the Newport Nocturne in September.
Help us help the community. We want to promote running to encourage everyone to have a go. Funds we raise from the two annual races we organise goes to help young people get into running and keep with it.
In 2007 the club initiated an Annual Awards ceremony in order to recognise and reward some of the many great performances put in by members each year.
Award winners (and sponsors of prizes) for 2007 were:

Award winners receive a trophy with their name engraved or another prize and the organisers are very grateful to those club members and others who have sponsored an Award.
We have considered the comments and ideas from members and have come to the unanimous decision that awards will be made using the age grading tables, which are controlled by WMA (World Masters Athletics) formerly WAVA (World Athletics Veteran Association). These tables give a grading formulae that allows for a comparison of runners, veteran, senior and junior based on their age so that members at all levels can be considered for award in each category.

If you have any ideas for other social events or would like to help organise them, please let us know.
The club was set up in the early 1980’s and we currently have over 100 members of all ages and abilities. You are very welcome to turn up to any of our runs and see if what we offer suits you. We aim to include everyone, especially people wanting to get into running.
There are three main club runs during the week. Just turn up and you’ll be given a warm welcome.
We organise weekly runs for beginners meeting at 6:00 at the Ultrasport offices in Audley Avenue. The session last for half and hour and allows you to walk/jog/run at your own pace. You won’t be left on your own and you’ll find helpful advice and encouragement.
Our 6:30pm group combines a warm up and some structured training enabling runners of different speeds to keep together. In winter, the run is all under street lighting. The group starts from the Ultrasport offices on Audley Avenue.
Our 7:00pm group meets in the car park at Lilleshall Sports Centre and the run provides opportunities for runners to choose different distances and paces. In winter, we use the roads around Newport but in the summer, we venture out into the beautiful countryside beyond the town.
There are various Sunday morning training runs in Newport, at the Wrekin or the hills of Church Stretton, as well as Club Special runs on some Sundays through the summer. There are also club social events held through the year.
Club members take part in many local races including the Telford Sexarathon series in the summer; the Shropshire summer and winter fell race series, and various triathlons. Many club members run the London Marathon, or other marathons either in the UK or abroad. This year we have organised club trips to the Berlin and Jungfrau marathons.
Whatever your running interests, there will be club members who have experience of training and competing and will be willing to pass on their tips and advice.
We organise two races each year. The Newport Carnival 10K and the challenging Wrekin Wrecker fell race.
